To me, having to serve in MMHA was indeed an eye-opening experience as I had been given the chance to interact with the clients there and gain immeasurable knowledge from the interaction. During the period of my internship in MMHA, I observed that its rehabilitation program is beneficial to the clients as it provides opportunities for them to follow rules, to interact with people and to take on responsibilities. In a way, it helps them to build self confidence and to be more independent. I realized that people who are suffering from mental illness do have the potential to get better with sufficient help. However, no matter how good any program might be, it still needs cooperation from the clients as well as support from the parents and the public in order to make things work.

My one month in MMHA has truly been an eye opener. It has altered my perception on people with mental illness. Just like you and me, they are capable of doing things on their own and they do enjoy the simple pleasures oflife such as playing games and music. The idea here is not to talk down to them but to help them to improve and move on with their lives which I believe is possible for some ofthem are very intelligent. Through this experience, my knowledge ofmental health has expanded. I have developed a better understanding ofthe needs and feelings ofpeople with mental illness. I have also learnt the value ofpatience for at times, it canbe challenging trying to interact with them. All in all, there is more to it than meets the eye when it comes to mental health and I feel that my time here was well spent.

I have benefitted from the internship through the activities conducted in MMHA and experiences working with people with mental illness. Humans are very complex and there are always new things to learn in our daily lives.
The opportunity for internship in MMHA is one ofthe crucial steps in the joumey for my career in the future as a psychologist. It allows me to understand the various ways to deal with different people, and it is helpful for me in my studies as well as my daily life. |
