The National "Train the Trainers" Workshop on 2-3 August 2003 at the Sheraton Hotel, Subang
The Malaysian Mental Health Association(MMHA) organised a weekend workshop on 2-3 August 2003 to educate care givers and mental health workers from throughout the country.
This workshop is part of the MMHA Family Support Group(FSG) National Training Programme which is undertaken to facilitate the development of more FSGs in Malaysia. The MMHA is coordinating the National FSG Training to train caregivers from all over the country. These caregivers will in turn become trainers to train more caregivers to facilitate the formation of the FSGs throughout Malaysia.
The objectives of the FSG training are:
- to provide support
- establish local FSGs
- advocacy for the policies and services for the mentally ill.
The goal of the FSG training is:
- to form a national FSG to advocate more effectively for the rights of the mentally ill.
There were 39 participants comprising 21 care givers and 18 mental health workers mostly from the Ministry of Health(MOH).
Dr Sharifah Rohani , Principal Assistant Director, Family Health Development, MOH, opened the Workshop with a brief overview of the Ministry's Community Mental Health Clinics in the country.
Dr Abdul Kadir , Hospital Director and Consultant Psychiatrist of Hospital Sentosa, Sarawak, taught the different Types of Mental Illnesses/Symptoms, Brain Biology/Medication, Problem Solving Skills, and Rehabilitaion.
Four members from MINDA(a Johor based FSG) taught Problem Solving Skills, Empathy, and Communication Skills.
The Honorary Secretary of MMHA, Ms Lim Ai Lian, taught Emotional Reaction and shared the experiences of MMHA on Advocacy. The Deputy President/Organizing chairperson talked on Self Care.
The sessions were all taught interactively. Ms Poh Kim Pheng(care giver/committee member, MMHA) and Mrs Ruth Lim(care giver/FSG member,MMHA) and other care givers shared their experiences.
Dr Abdul Kadir shared his vision of one National FSG becoming a reality soon. He encouraged all the trained care givers to go home and initiate the formation of local FSGs and be a resource for training other care givers.
The President of MMHA announced that MMHA would host another national FSG conference in Kuala Lumpur next year. This conference will review the progress made in terms of the number of training courses held and local FSGs formed in the country.
MMHA expresses its sincere appreciation for the much valued input from the MOH, and MINDA, without which the Workshop would not have been possible.
The material for the training course was adapted from the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill(NAMI, USA).
The Workshop was supported by Eli Lilly, a pharmaceutical company.
Report prepared by Dr Koo Yoon Kin,
Deputy President/Organising Chairperson of the Workshop.
