Are You Caring For A Mentally Ill Relative?
The Malaysian Mental Health Association's Family Support Group was set up to help people like you. It caters to your special needs.
- The Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) is a voluntary, non-profit organisation registered with the Registrar of Societies since 1968.
- It is managed by an elected committee comprising mental health professionals and other volunteers committed to the promotion of mental health in the community.
- The Family Support Group (FSG) is a self-help group under the umbrella of the MMHA. It is run by a sub-committee comprising care-givers of a mentally ill family member, with a psychiatrist as adviser.
How can the Family Support Group help family members of the mentally ill?
- It provides education through public talks and forums on the nature, treatment and management of different types of mental disorders.
- It provides opportunities for members to share their problems and experiences with others in the same boat and to learn from one another.
What are some long-term Objectives of the Family Support Group?
- To enable members to work together to:-
- help their ill relatives live more meaningfully and productively by setting up a skills development centre (to train them in basic work skills) and/or a sheltered workshop to provide some form of employment in a sheltered environment.
- provide residential care for their ill relatives either on a temporary basis (to relieve the care-giver) or more permanently.
- To extend the MMHA's efforts to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness in the community so that people with mental disorders will receive greater acceptance.
- To assist the MMHA to advocate for more benefits for the mentally ill or for their parent or guardian.
You can help us to achieve these and other objectives by becoming a member of our Family Support Group.
This comes FREE when you join the MMHA, which will cost you only a nominal fee each year.
Membership in the MMHA entitles you to receive information on activities organised by the MMHA, use the Resource Centre and enjoy other benefits that may be introduced in the future.
As a member of the MMHA's Family Support Group, you will be able to:
- receive information about the talks and Public Forums organised by the Family Support Group.
- get advice over the phone or through e-mail on how to cope with your crisis or difficult situation.
- initiate or participate in projects supported by the FSG to help the mentally ill.
